What originally inspired you to take on an acting career?
I’ve always been fascinated with stories told through the camera. Since I was a child, my family and I would go to the movies once a week and we’d watch 2-3 movies at the cinema. We’d sneak in since it would get expensive. I knew I wanted to be in that medium. Not specifically as an actor, but storytelling.
What are you proud of?
I am proud of my upbringing. My heritage. My family. Being able to live in both the US and in Mexico for most of my youth. Understanding hard work and perseverance. Nothing is ever handed to anyone. None of this would be made possible if my parents didn’t instill this on my siblings and I.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
I grew up on El Chavo del Ocho and Roberto Gomez Bolaños was someone I always looked up to – especially how he was able to create from both sides of the Camera. Also, The Matrix and Pulp Fiction were big influences for me when I was growing up. These were films that I had to re-watch several times and every time I had a different experience. As I went through puberty I came across Ińarritú and Cuaron and that’s when I really knew, I wanted to be a storyteller.
Do you have anyone you admire and would love to work with in the future?
Iñarritu, Tarantino, Ethan Hawke, Benicio del Toro. The list goes on. But in the end, I want to work with friends. People that I respect as humans and artist.
What were the biggest struggles you had to face to get to where you are?
Getting out of my own way. Sometimes we build our own reality in correlation to how we view ourselves. Needing to stay assertive in moments of doubt and humble in moments of success.
How do you stay in shape?
By listening to my body. Being kind to it and knowing what foods to minimize and what physical activities it’s asking for. Obviously having a daily workout routine helps. But it all starts in the kitchen and what you put in your body.
Do you wanna do any directing or producing in the future?
What is the The Umbrella Academy about and tell us about your character?
The Umbrella Academy follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes who work together to solve the mystery behind their adopted wealthy father, while also needing to save the world from the imminent threat of the apocalypse. It’s very much a mixture of The Incredibles and the Adams family.
I play, Diego Hargreeves, Number 2 who’s always had to work 3 times harder than everybody to prove that he was capable of being No. 1, the leader of the UA, which Luther Hargreeves was anointed by our father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves.
Are you and your character alike in anyway?
Yes, We both wear extremely tight clothes.
What other new projects are you working on?
I have a few films due to come out this year. Aside from that, maybe you guys need a coffee runner?
What goals do you have for 2019?
To build on 2018 and challenge myself. Surprise myself I guess.
