For those new to your music, can you please introduce yourself?
I’m Courtney Cooper…a soul infused indie pop singer songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. My album WAVES comes out August 24, 2018. It’s very r&b influenced with electronic undertones.

How important was attending Berklee College of Music for you? Did you learn a lot whilst there?
Berklee was such an amazing experience! I was so young, I really grew up with my fellow classmates. Being constantly surrounded by some of the most amazingly talented teachers and students was magical. I learned so much musically, and built such an incredible drive and fire within me to constantly be practicing and working to better myself. I studied music production and engineering as well as vocal performance, so I learned my way around a recording studio in addition to singing.

How important is Brooklyn, NY and its people regarding your sound? What is it like recording there?
Brooklyn is such a cool and hip place, but ironically, this album was really inspired by the few years I lived in LA. When I began writing the album I had just moved back to NY and was hit with a really brutal winter. I longed for the sunshine and beauty of Southern California as the snow fell and the cold, dark, and dreary days seemed never ending. I spent a lot of time looking out the window daydreaming about Cali and those daydreams are the songs that make up the album. But of course without winter, one cannot truly appreciate summer—not so different from my first album in that without darkness there cannot be light.

Are there going to be any tour dates coming up? Where can we see you play?
Yes—absolutely! Still being finalized, but expect shows in NY & LA very soon—I’ll be announcing on my instagram. @Courtney_Cooper

Do you have any ambitions to fulfill before the end of the year?
Yes—many!!! I’d love to play a few major shows and festivals supporting this album. I’m already working on new music as well and would love to collaborate with more people on my next project.

Have you got a favourite memory from your time in music – one that sticks in your mind?
My favorite time in music will always be my time at Berklee. It really was a magical experience being completely immersed in all things music, surrounded by the most talented and amazing people who all share the same love. I made such incredible friendships with so many of my classmates, I really hold my time there very close to my heart. Living in the dorms was also unbelievably fun...being able to knock on the door across or down the hall and jam or record at anytime was the best!

What advice would you give to new artists coming through?
Always stay true to yourself—Always, always, always! It’s so easy to get caught up in what industry people might say you should look or sound like, but I’ve found the best music comes from being genuine.

What artist would you love to collaborate with and why?
There are so many! Top of my list right now is Gallant, RY X, H.E.R., & Jessie Ware. Gallant is a beast—his voice is so unbelievable—he is such a talent. All of them are such incredible talents! I really relate to H.E.R., and Jessie Ware has written some of my favorite songs of all time. RYX has such an incredible vibe in addition to his amazing voice, songs, and instrumentation.
